Thursday, September 18 Aron Theatre Co-operative Pay What You Can
705-653-3390 Jeff Beaver and Tim Smoke, from Alderville First Nation, will talk about the deep-rooted tradition of Manoomin (wild rice) harvesting. The Anishinaabeg believe that Manoomin and three other sacred foods, corn (Mndaamin), strawberries (Odeminan), and fish (Giigoonkewag), were gifts from the creator. Under the Williams Treaties, Parks Canada has a legal duty to consult with the First Nations in relation to their rights associated with the harvesting of wild rice in the Trent-Severn Waterway. Through canoe paddles dipping beneath tall rice stalks, people will learn about the rhythmic "knock and gather" method practiced for generations. Jeff and Tim will also share the spiritual teachings that connect community, culture, and the land.Date and Time
